Maine Center for Disease Control Advises Caution in Heat (6/18/2008)
With Maine heading into summer, it is important prevent heat-related problems and to recognize the signs of heat illness early. Heat-related illnesses and deaths are preventable, yet over the past 30 years more people have died in this country from heat than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. Those most susceptible include infants and young children, people 65 years old and older, people with a mental illness, and those who are physically ill with heart disease or high blood pressure. Check on your neighbors, family. and friends, especially those who are at high risk for heat-related illness.

Portland Fire Department Reminds Residents that Fire Hydrants Cannot Be Painted (5/27/2008)
In response to a growing number of fire hydrants discovered to have been painted without authorization, the Portland Fire Department reminds the community that painting their neighborhood fire hydrant is forbidden without permission from the Portland Water District.

Portland Remembers City Hall Fire of 1908 (1/23/2008)
Tomorrow, City officials and the Portland Fire Department will remember the courageous efforts undertaken by Portland firemen and employees to preserve City Hall on the 100th anniversary of the infamous fire. The fire, which started at 2:23 AM, January 24, 1908, destroyed City Hall and caused estimated damage of approximately $600,000.

Maine Disaster Aid Tops $7.2 Million For April Nor'easter (6/28/2007)
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - More than $7.2 million in assistance has been approved for Maine following the severe storms and flooding resulting from an April Nor'easter. Residents affected by the storm have less than two weeks to apply for assistance before the
July 9 deadline.

STRENGTHENING A REMARKABLE CITY
Portland is a small city of about 30 square
miles, set on a peninsula overlooking Casco Bay, with a nighttime population of
about 68,000 that swells to over 150,000 during the day. The PFD protects a
diverse community that contains a major Seaport, an International Jetport, large
industrial companies, a large area of residential multi unit dwellings that
consist of numerous tightly packed three to five story apartment houses, and 2
major highways.
Portland currently staffs the apparatus as follows:
- Engines 1,4,5,6,7
(Fireboat), Ladder 4 (Quint), and Engine 11 with 3 firefighter crews
- Engine 9 with a 3
